I think this is something that is waaaayyyyy relevant to our local scene… This is an article written by our friend Big Moon, and taken from his blog Mooniversoul.com. I wanted to share this and maybe help someone reach some goals….
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS FOR A SUCCESSFUL
“LOCAL” ARTIST
10. Be original & creative (DO NOT fall victim to what is trendy or gimmick)
9. Make a STRONG connection with YOUR Community (OBVIOUSLY the MORE people you touch, the MORE people that WILL SUPPORT YOUR MOVEMENT)
8. Form a bond with DJ’s & PD’s of your city’s radio stations, clubs etc. (CONTRARY to POPULAR BELIEF, to reach commercial success you NEED a commercial medium i.e. Radio T.V. so forth and so on)
7. TAKE “Constructive Criticism” (DO NOT just present your music to YOUR circle of friends or family, RATHER, GO OUT and present your music to people who are UNBIASED to you. You’ll get genuine feedback rather than someone just hyping you up because you’re cool with them)
6. Be Proactive in YOUR Movement (LISTEN, If YOU DON’T BELIEVE & SUPPORT YOUR Movement, WHO THE FUCK WILL???)
5. Market & Promote YOURSELF accordingly (If people don’t know who YOU are & what YOU’RE about or if YOUR product is NOT QUALITY, THEY WILL NOT LISTEN! INVEST in your promotions. Spend the EXTRA $$$ to have a CD cover and artwork. DO NOT just write on a CD and think that shit is cool because IT’S NOT!!!)
4. MIX & MASTER YOUR SHIT!!! (DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT??? IF I DO, YOU SHOULD STOP MAKING MUSIC!)
3. Support other “Local” Artists (There’s NOTHING wrong with HEALTHY competition, but there’s ALSO NOTHING wrong with letting your fellow Artists that you appreciate their artistry as well.)
2. KEEP IT 100 (DO NOT talk about ridin’ Bentleys & Maybachs when you’re pushing a skateboard… DO NOT talk about having RACKS on RACKS on RACKS when you just used ya EBT to put food in ya mouth… REAL experiences make REAL music touches REAL people.)
1. ALWAYS KEEP YA HEAD TORWARDS THE SKY AND YA FAITH IN THE CLOUDS!!! (If God is your co-pilot, YOU NEED TO SWITCH SEATS!!!)
